Management & Treatment of Arthritis
Osteoarthritis is the degeneration or wearing of a joint resulting in symptoms, clinical signs and
usually functional restriction. The symptoms are usually pain, swelling and stiffness of the joint
in question. The clinical signs are swelling, restricted motion, tenderness of the joint and possibly
deformity in late disease. The functional restriction is usually produced as a result of the pain,
swelling and stiffness of the joint. A deformity in late disease commonly produces a pronounced
functional restriction and in the case of hip or knee arthritis results in the use of a stick,
crutches or other walking aids. The treatment of OA concentrates on reducing the symptoms, controlling
the progression and maintaining function without deformity.
