What is Patella Tendonitis ?
Patellar tendonitis is a painful condition affecting the patellar tendon around the inferior
pole of the patella. The condition is often associated with the jumping or aging athlete. It is
also termed the "jumpers" knee. It is common in jumping sports such as volleyball, basketball
and jogging. The condition is particularly troublesome when running down hills. The condition
is classified into four groups. Grade 1 is where a patient experiences pain after activity, Grade
2 during and after activity and Grade 3 during normal activities. The pain is felt on the anterior
aspect of the knee in relation to the patella and particularly around the inferior pole of the
patella. The pain usually restricts the ability to undertake sporting activities.
