Bellamy faces long lay-off

Author: David P Johnson     Date: 10/22/2003

"Comment regarding patella tendonitis from a BBC news item.."

I read with interest the news article appearing on the BBC web site relating to Craig Bellamy, the Newcastle and Welsh International football striker.

It appears that like Alan Shearer before him, Craig has travelled to the United States to have surgery for patellar tendonitis in Vail, Colorado. The condition of patellar tendonitis has been extensively analysed here in the United Kingdom by myself in Bristol in liaison with the Imperial College. The results of that research resulted in a new arthroscopic technique for the treatment of patellar tendonitis which has proven to be the most successful surgical procedure for this condition to treat and this technique has been adopted at many sports injury centres worldwide.

It is therefore disappointing that our international stars travel to the United States for a procedure which was designed here in Bristol where there is ten years experience of using this new technique. It also seems wasteful that our international stars travel to the States for surgery when people from this country, Europe and even the States fly into Bristol for the treatment of this condition.
